January has always been a time of inner reflection. Casting off the indulgencies of the festive period is a must for many at the start of the New Year. We've had the January Detox, we've had Dry January and in 2020 the new kid on the block is Veganuary.
This big foodie trend of 2019/2020 is seeing people switching from meat eating to a plant-based diet to aid their health. At Hinchliffe's we are not here to judge, we supply beautifully tasty, carefully sourced fruit and veg that would be show-stoppers on any vegans' plate. But we are a Farm Shop after all and we do sell meat. So, for those who still wish to start the new year off being more health conscious but still love their meat, we have put together a few tips on how you can still keep meat in your diet but just be a little bit healthier.
Choose a filet over a rib-eye steak or a pork steak over some belly pork slices. To cut down on the fats in your meat make sure you go for a lean cut. For example, if choosing a leg of lamb get it off the bone, although it is juicier on the bone, off the bone it will be much leaner.
For many meat-lovers a plate is empty without meat on it. Just make sure it is only a third or less of your plate. Fill the rest with vegetables, beans, and whole grains.
Grass fed beef contains as much as three times more Omega-3 (good fats found in oily fish) than grain fed beef. This aids prevention of depression and cancer, whilst lowering blood pressure. Also it is rich in Vitamin A and E, which help strengthen the immune system and maintain healthy skin and eyes. At Hinchliffe's we are proud to say that all are cattle are grass-fed and 100% traceable.
Cooking meat at high temperatures, such as frying or grilling, creates compounds that may cause cancer. Turn your meat frequently and discard any of the burnt parts before eating.
So if you are adopting Veganuary then pop in and see our wide-range of carefully sourced fruit and vegetables. But if you are keeping meat in your diet but trying to eat a little healthier, pop in and talk to our butchers who can advise you the best cuts for a healthier diet.
A high specification redevelopment of an existing Farm Shop, Restaurant & Butchery. Following a fire which devastated the original premises, and to
replace current temporary buildings - the scheme will both restore and greatly improve on these previous facilities.
